My Christmas Exchange Fic in Between a Buch of the Most Talented People

Well, I took part in 2014's hd_erised on LifeJournal and, though there are a lot of better fics in the pool, I'm still proud of my story. So, this post will show you my own fic and rec some more and truly wonderful stories of this Christmassy exchange fest.

Title: The Art Thief
Author: nia_kantorka
Recipient: iwao and this_bloody_cat
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~21,000

top!Draco, implied switching

(show spoiler)

Content/Enticements: extensive use of paint, artiness
Summary: When an art thief steals one of Harry Potter’s paintings the Minister of Magic requests one of his best Aurors on that case. Draco Malfoy is not amused.

I had a helluva time writing this story because my giftees are some of my favourite Harry/Draco artists on LJ. So writing in detail about Harry's pictures was a lot of fun. In the end I had a slight problem with holding the deadline (due to some colds that messed up my writing schedule) but I still think the story is not too rushed. And though I'm far away (as in very very far) from being a good writer, I love the epilogue. That's the only part I can still read without cringing. ;p

My three favourite fics from hd_erised:

Title: Another Mask Behind You
Author: lettered
Recipient: raitala
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~120,000
Warnings: Please note the warnings are important for this fic.

dubcon, almost all of this is dubcon depending on your definition, non-con, the non-con isn’t super graphic but it does get quite uncomfortable, suicidal ideation, past suicide of a minor character, past death of another minor character, D/s elements, D/s elements but the dynamic shifts back and forth, BDSM, BDSM but it’s not formalized, threat of whipping, dishonesty, prostitution, switching, mentions of past abuse, alcoholism, smoking, homophobic slurs, negative attitude towards sex work, pet names, lots of pet names, snowballing, hate!sex, rimming, felching, the felching isn’t graphic, but the rimming is, infidelity but it depends on your definition, not infidelity in an explicitly committed relationship, exhibitionism, semi-public sex, long hair

(show spoiler)

Summary: Draco is a high-end prostitute who hides his identity. Harry unknowingly hires him. And then there is porn, questions about identity, domestic bliss, more porn, and truth as seen through a web of lies. (And then more porn. Seriously, if you don’t want sex scene after sex scene you probably shouldn’t read this. And please read the warnings.)

I know the topics of this story are not everyone's cup of tea (read the warnings!), but this fic is about much more than just about the sex (like lettered said in her summary). It's about falling for someone you don't want to fall for, about accepting the real person behind a disguise, about dealing with the terror of the past and about true love. And yes, there's a lot of wonderful hot sex too. Draco's pov is one of uttermost beauty, even if he is such an arse at the beginning (I could relate to him so good). I loved him and his story here.

Title: One Thousand Bars
Author: lumosed_quill
Recipient: melusinahp
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~19,000

angst, some name-calling, veiled threat of violence/sexual assault (OMC)

(show spoiler)

Content/Enticements: Saving People Thing!Harry, Draco in Azkaban, immediately post-war. Other characters: Hermione/Ron, Ginny/Dean, Neville/Hannah, Narcissa Malfoy, OMCs, Kreacher, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Weasleys, Andromeda Tonks
Summary: And I will hold on hope / And I won't let you choke / On the noose around your neck / And I'll find strength in pain / And I will change my ways / I'll know my name as it's called again

Lumosed_quill is one of my favourite fic authors, but as the fest was anonymous, I didn't know she wrote this wonderful story until the reveals in January. I'm not sure if she's written such an angsty story before, but it's, oh, so good. I loved so much about it, the beginning and end with the spider, that Draco makes his own life so miserable and that - in the end - it's not Harry who saves the day (that was really refreshing because he normal is the one). Well, it was one of the shorter stories but intense and perfect nonetheless.

Title: A Private Reason for This
Author: femmequixotic
Recipient: dicta_contrion
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~92,000

flogging, minor character death

(show spoiler)

Content/Enticements: mild BDSM, voyeurism, Aurors and murderers oh my!

Summary: When the wife of a star politician in the Scottish Ministry turns up dead just outside Hogsmeade, Draco Malfoy and his murder investigation team are called in from the Edinburgh Auror force to find her killer. What DCI Malfoy doesn't expect, however, is to have an ex from two decades past end up in his murder room, cocking up not only his case, but also his heart.

This story was more like an Elizabeth George crime novel than a fanfiction. Once started I couldn't put it down. Draco was a really brilliant guv (aka Detective Chief Inspector from Ediburgh's Crime Auror Team) and the whole plot was captivating like hell. At first I had some problems with Harry (who comes late into the picture) and didn't buy his reasons for his behaviour in his past, but after I while I started to fall for him (like Draco did again). At some point one can deduce who the culprit is, but it didn't matter because at that point it was all about the why and how. A wonderful and thrilling fic.
